Purpose-built heavy lift ship Benarty (1963-1981)
The concept of Heavy Lift Shipping has a long history our industry, and Ben Line shares in this history with some of our own experience in days gone by which we can illustrate through some of the old Ben Line ships and cargoes that were carried.
We have built on past experiences with our own ships in the past and more recently through working with a variety of heavy lift operators, offshore and project logistics customers. Dealing with heavy / out of gauge cargo brings with it a whole list of challenges and requirements, but we enjoy the challenge that such cargoes brings us and plan to continue to build on this well into the future.
Here at Ben Line, we have a rich history with heavy lift operations. The purpose built heavy lift ship ‘Benarty’ was one of our vessels that we operated from 1963-1981. Some of the cargoes that she carried included a German steam locomotive bound for a British railway museum and a British ‘Austerity’ type 2-8-0 locomotive in War Department livery. ‘Benarty’ also carried naval crafts which to/from Hong Kong, and even a fire engine which was destined for Kedah in north west Malaysia.
Take a look at some of the pictures below:
Moving forward to modern times, heavy lift operations are handled by both our Project Logistics and Port Agency Services departments. Our Project Logistics department provides tailored logistic solutions to move both large and small shipments. Our work scope spans the offshore oil and gas, petrochemical, power generation, mining, construction, heavy industries and renewable sectors.
