History Bites – Fire on board the Mv Benloyal - Singapore's very first Olympian to the rescue! 08-Mar-2016

A parcel of tin slag from Puloh Brani was shipped on the Mv Benloyal towards the end of the 1950's and a cargo which generated considerable heat in the vessels hold causing spontaneous combustion. At the time there was timber stowed above the slag and when it started to catch fire senior Ben Line Management were alerted. The Singapore Harbour Board fire brigade was called and they acted efficiently and quickly to extinguish what turned out to be a small fire. The Commander of the Harbour Board brigade was Lloyd Valberg, Singapore's very first Olympian and who represented them at high jump during the 1948 London games. It was of no surprise to learn that it was he who turned out to supervise the firemen and that his athletic qualities came to use during this particular incident!
