Malaysia ports handling capacity up 16.6% 02-Dec-2010

Malaysian ports handling capacity between January and October this year surged by 16.6% to 15,306,048 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), with Port Klang, specifically Westport, leading the way. In the same period, Kong said Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) hit a total of 5,384,096 TEUs, registering 35.2% from the overall number. The ministry is confident that the total capacity could reach 18.4 million TEUs by year-end amid the growing trend of handling capacity in all the ports.

Earlier this year, the total handling capacity of Malaysia's ports was projected to be 17.7 million TEUs for 2010 but the figure was later revised upwards following the better-than-expected performance in the last few months.
