In addition to the above, Japan has started measuring radiation levels on ships and containers leaving the Tokyo Bay area destined for foreign ports in order to address fears about contamination from the earthquake-damaged Fukushima nuclear plant which led to the release of radiation. Shipowners will shortly be issued with certificates recording radiation levels. Those vessels and containers exceeding the permitted level will not be permitted to leave the ports of Tokyo, Kawasaki and Yokohama.
