Ben Line Canada – Industry Update: Navigating the Aftermath of the CN/CPKC Rail Strike
In response to the recent labour disputes that culminated in a CN/CPKC rail strike and lockout, the Canadian government has stepped in to impose binding arbitration. On August 22, the Minister of Labour directed the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to assist in settling the disputes, ensuring that rail services across the country could resume.
As rail lines works on lifting the lockout and initiating recovery plans, we at Ben Line Agencies are closely monitoring the situation. The rail strike had a significant impact on the Port of Vancouver, where two-thirds of cargo relies on rail transport. With operations beginning to resume, we’re committed to keeping our clients informed and ensuring a smooth transition back to full service.

Ben Line North America – Port News: Record-Breaking Surge at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach
The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach have once again claimed their title as the busiest shipping hub in the U.S., with a remarkable surge in import volumes this July. The Port of Los Angeles handled an impressive 940K TEUs, marking a 37% increase from last year and the busiest month since May 2021.
The Port of Long Beach also set a new milestone with a 53% year-over-year increase, processing 882K TEUs and breaking its previous July record. These figures underscore the resilience and importance of these ports in global trade, as reported by the Chamber of Shipping.

Ben Line Canada – Industry Alert: Potential Rail Strike in Canada
A critical situation is unfolding in Canada as the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference has issued a 72-hour strike notice to Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) and Canadian National Railway (CN). This could lead to significant disruptions in rail services starting on Thursday, August 22nd, if an agreement is not reached. Both CPKC and CN are preparing for possible work stoppages, with CPKC already halting shipments and CN warning of a phased network shutdown.
